What sets bakhoor apart from incense sticks
A stick burns on its own from end to end and gives off a continuous smoke. Bakhoor is made of wood chips or paste soaked in perfumed oils: it does not burn by itself, it melts with heat. You place it on a glowing charcoal or an electric burner, and it releases its smoke for a few minutes only.
That difference changes everything in use: bakhoor smoke is far denser and penetrates fabrics, where it stays for several days. It is the traditional way to perfume a home and clothing across the Arabian peninsula.
How to burn it
On charcoal: light a tablet in an incense burner until it glows red and turns white with ash, then place a single piece the size of a grain of rice on it.
On an electric burner: simpler, flameless, and since the heat is gentler, the diffusion is slower and less smoky.
Dosing is the most frequent mistake: bakhoor is far more concentrated than ordinary incense. Start small.
Perfuming clothes: pass a garment or scarf over the smoke for a few seconds. That is the traditional use, and longevity on fabric is remarkable.
Ventilate after use. Never leave a glowing charcoal unattended, place the burner on a heat-resistant surface, and keep it out of reach of children and pets.
