The name promises oud, the first spray promises something else. What rises immediately is a rich, sweet almond, very close to almond paste, almost edible. No harshness, nothing pharmaceutical about it. After about twenty minutes, the composition warms up: cinnamon bark brings a dry touch, Turkish rose and Tunisian orange blossom lay down a floral veil that keeps the almond from turning into a flat dessert. Then comes the real heart of the matter — tonka bean and vanilla take over entirely, honeyed and slightly leathery, while the amber wood gives definition and reach. Who it is for, and when
Unisex in the true sense of the word: the rose does not feminize it enough to exclude men, and the gourmand almond does not masculinize it enough to put women off. Wearers report that it lasts through the day on skin, and far longer on a garment, with moderate to strong projection: it creates a bubble around you without filling the whole room.
Autumn and winter are its obvious seasons. Heat does not suit it; the almond and vanilla thicken and become heavy above 25°C. It excels in the evening, at a restaurant, at an event. At the office it remains possible provided you drop to a single spray. The only recurring objection concerns the sugar: if gourmand scents do not appeal to you, or if you were looking for a smoky, austere oud, this one is not for you.
How to use
Two sprays at most to begin with, on the wrists and the hollow of the neck. The 75 ml eau de parfum is concentrated and tonka bean has a strong ability to diffuse: the dose is easily underestimated the first few times. Do not rub the skin after application, the top almond is fragile and breaks down with rubbing. One spray on a scarf or collar extends the trail over several days. Keep the bottle in its box, at a stable temperature; direct light durably alters the vanilla notes.

Can you really smell the oud?
No, and that is the remark that comes up most often. Shaghaf Oud is the name of a Swiss Arabian collection, not a description of the fragrance. In this Tonka version, oud does not appear as a medicinal or animalic note: what you will smell is almond, tonka bean and vanilla over an amber wood. If you are looking for a straightforward oud, turn to another member of the collection.
What is the difference from the other Shaghaf Oud fragrances?
Shaghaf Oud Tonka is the most gourmand and the sweetest of the five. Shaghaf Oud Abyad leans toward white, clean and powdery; Shaghaf Oud Ahmar toward red fruit; Shaghaf Oud Royale is the most opulent; Shaghaf Oud, the base version, remains the most wood-focused. The choice really comes down to register, not to quality.
Why 75 ml and not 100 ml?
It is the standard size of the Shaghaf collection at Swiss Arabian. There is no 100 ml version of this fragrance: the 75 ml is the reference bottle, not a reduced size.
Can it be worn in summer?
Hardly, in full sun. Almond and vanilla become noticeably heavier in the heat. In the warm season, keep it for evenings or air-conditioned interiors, with a single spray.
