Bakhour is a traditional Gulf incense that is heated to scent a room, along with the curtains, cushions and clothes in it. This Yara bakhour is by Ard Al Zaafaran, a Dubai perfume house. It comes in a pink box decorated with white floral patterns, marked “Bukhoor Yara” in Arabic and English, with a net weight of 40 g. Its register is woody and floral.
Who it’s for, when to use it
To scent your living room before guests arrive, the entrance of your home or a bedroom, one room at a time. In the Gulf countries, bakhour traditionally accompanies the welcoming of loved ones and celebrations such as Ramadan or Eid. If you are new to bakhour, this small 40 g size is a good way to learn how to use it.
How to use
Bakhour comes as a pressed tablet, which you break into small pieces.
With a charcoal incense burner: light a charcoal disc, wait until it is glowing red, place it in the incense burner, then put a small piece of bakhour on top. The scented smoke is released within a few seconds.
With an electric burner: place the piece on the heating plate, without charcoal or flame.
Start with a small piece and add more if needed. Air the room during and after diffusion. To scent a garment, hold it at a distance above the smoke, never in contact with the incense burner. Store the tablet in its closed box, away from moisture.
